Philadelphia is the largest city located in the state of Pennsylvania and the fifth largest city in the country. The city is considered an educational, cultural and commercial center and it was the geographical and social center of the original colonies. This city is a centerpiece of early American history and it held many of the actions and ideas that started the American Revolution and the following independence of the country. When the nation was very young, Philadelphia was the most populated city and it even served as the nation's capital at one time. The city still holds great importance today and many visitors come to its region each year to do business, explore the history of the nation and enjoy the many attractions it has to offer. As you plan a trip to this historic area, be sure to look into the luxury hotels Philadelphia has to offer guests.

There is so much history in this city; it is hard to know where to start your exploration. Many visitors enjoy visiting Independence Hall since it is one of the most important historical landmarks in the country. So many steps towards independence were taken in this hall, which was visited by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and even George Washington. The Declaration of Independence was signed in this hall in 1776 and the first American Flag was uncovered there in 1777. The Articles of Confederation were ratified in the hall and even the U.S. Constitution came into draft form within its walls. The building has much historic significance and visitors can take free-guided tours of the 45-acre grounds including the hall and the park that surrounds it.

City Hall is another recognizable building in the area. This hall is the largest and tallest city hall in the country. It was also the most expensive city hall. The building has impressive 22 feet thick walls that support the weight of the floors above it. Visitors can enjoy the observation deck that is open to the public and some of the interior parts of the building can also be visited.

The Liberty Bell is one of the most famous symbols in America and a popular Philadelphia attraction. The bell stands for freedom and the end to the struggle for independence. The famous bell is cracked and now sits within the Liberty Bell Center. Visitors can see the bell for free and observe its famous, engraved words. The bell used to be located in Independence Hall, but it was moved in 2003 to a modern pavilion inside the Independence National Historic Park. The hall is still visible in the background since the bell is displayed in a glass room.

Logan Circle is a central plaza with a wonderful memorial fountain. This area was first called Northwest Square, part of the squares that William Penn designed the city around in 1682. The square was first used for public executions and burials. Today, the square is surrounded by a number of important institutions. The fountain in the center was built in 1924 as a memorial to the late designer of the Philadelphia City Hall and the William Penn statue.

Elfreth's Alley is one of the most charming streets in the city. This street is the oldest continually operated street in the country and when you walk down its paths, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. The alley was established in 1702 and many of the buildings on the street were built between 1728 and 1836. The historic street has undergone repairs over the years and much of its grandeur has been fully restored. Many of the homes that line the street are private, but visitors are welcome to view the outside and enjoy the colonial architecture. One of the homes even serves as a museum for visitors.
